The World's Most Sophisticated Distillery

This is the modern bourbon experience

Bardstown Bourbon Company is the first Napa Valley style destination on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, combining distilling, culinary, and beverage expertise to create a modern, authetic bourbon experience.

No secrets or fabricated legends. Bardstown Bourbon celebrates the craft of making bourbon for the modern bourbon drinker and the beloved community that brings bourbon to the world.

Set on 100 acres in the heart of the Bourbon Capital of the World, Bardstown Bourbon Company thrives on innovation, while always honoring the history and tradition of distilling. We produce the highest-quality bourbons, whiskies, and ryes – and through our one-of-a-kind Collaborative Distilling Program, we produce unique blends in partnership with some of the industry’s premier wine and spirits brands. As well, our Custom Distilling Program uses state-of-the-art technology combined with the most experienced team in the bourbon industry to distilling over 50 mashbills for more than 30 different partners (learn more here).

It’s what we call the modern bourbon experience.

The art of fusing.

Fusion is the celebration and process of blending of newer and older bourbons to create something unique.

The younger spirits are 100% our own product, aged three to four years, mellowed with hand- selected, supremely aged bourbon that beautifully complements our specific recipes.

As we grow, our bourbon ages — a difference you can taste with each Fusion release.

The art of blending.

The Discovery Series showcases the art of blending hand-selected, supremely aged bourbon. For each release, team members throughout the distillery taste, analyze, and vote on the best recipe. It is a celebration of our collaborative spirit, working together to create something unique and spectacular. Discovery means exploration and pushing the boundaries – blending fine bourbons from Kentucky, other parts of the U.S., and hard-to-find whiskies from around the world.

The art of finishing.

The Collaborative Series is a celebration of kindred spirits. We partner with our favorite producers in wine, beer, and spirits to create exceptional expressions. Our hand- selected premium bourbon is placed into our partner’s barrels then aged in our rickhouses to mature into the finest one-of-kind release. Recent releases include award-winning collaborations with Maison Ferrand, Founders’ Brewing, The Prisoner Wine Co., Chateau de Laubade, and more.

The art of innovation.

Innovation, collaboration, and exclusivity come together in our Distillery Collection. These one-time, limited offerings present the best of our dedication to the art and science of bourbon. From experimental finishes to unique single barrels, this bottle encapsulates our approach to whiskey-making. Every time you visit, there’s something new to discover and take home after your Bardstown experience. It is both the journey and the destination.

Steve Nally
Master Distiller and Bourbon Hall of Fame Inductee.

With close to 50 years of industry experience, Steve Nally is one of the few remaining Bourbon Hall of Fame Master Distillers currently working in this capacity. He and his wife Donna are the only living husband-and-wife couple in the Bourbon Hall of Fame. Steve’s unique skill set makes him an important strategic asset for the Bardstown Bourbon Company. Nally grew up in Loretto, where he started his career with Maker’s Mark in 1972. Over time, Steve progressed through every facet Maker’s operations, culminating in the role of Master Distiller which he started in 1988. Nally retired from Maker’s Mark in 2003, having spent more than three decades at the distillery, to start his own distilling consultancy. During this time, Steve laid the foundation for Wyoming Whiskey, which launched in 2009.  Steve built Wyoming Whiskey from the ground up, developed their first line of products, and secured a number of awards and achievements. In 2014, Steve returned to Kentucky as employee number 1 at Bardstown Bourbon Company. Breaking ground in 2014, Nally and the team sold out BBC’s custom distilling capacity before it was even completed in 2016. Since then, BBC has quadrupled capacity, producing more than 50 unique mash-bills, for 30 different customers. In 2018, Bardstown Bourbon launched its own, award-winning brand, becoming the seventh-largest distiller of Bourbon, Rye, and American Whiskies in the US. Steve remains involved with product development while also serving as the face of the brand as it expands across the country.

Samantha “Sam” Montgomery
National Brand Ambassador, Bardstown Bourbon Company. Certified Specialist of Spirits and Executive Bourbon Steward.

As Beverage Specialist and National Brand Ambassador of both Bardstown Bourbon Company and its in-house Kitchen & Bar, Sam Montgomery connects the consumer to the distillery experience in Bardstown, Kentucky. The 29-year-old Peoria, Illinois native spent nearly half her life in the service industry. Her experiences and training have afforded her the creativity and qualities of a social chameleon; a skillset pertinent to the company’s brand, outreach and development.

At just 15, Montgomery started working for a locally owned restaurant in her Illinois hometown. It was here where she learned how much she loved interacting with the public. Montgomery continued to develop her service industry skills over the next six years before launching her bartending career at Peoria’s upscale seafood restaurant, The Fish House. Craving more challenges in making craft cocktails, she moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 2017, a city she says has a vibrant cocktail and restaurant culture.

Montgomery honed her craft bartending skills at acclaimed Louisville restaurant, Decca, before accepting a Beverage Specialist position at Bottle & Bond, the first iteration of Bardstown Bourbon Company’s restaurant and bar, in 2018. In this role, she managed the beverage program, launched the restaurant’s first barrel-aged cocktail program and organized a vintage collection of more than 300 American whiskies curated by renowned whiskey author, Fred Minnick. When it came time for the distillery to release a new collaborative bourbon, Montgomery received the opportunity to put her expertise to work by helping to blend the product that went directly into the bottle. Montgomery had her original blend chosen blindly by a panel of tasters and released as Discovery Series #3, making her one of the youngest female blenders in history.

In 2019, Montgomery became Bardstown Bourbon Company’s first National Brand Ambassador. With a focus on organizing events in-house and across the country, Montgomery assists state managers with brand education and national outreach. Last year, she became a Certified Specialist of Spirits and plans to take an Advanced Distillation course. Inspired by women and persons of color in the whiskey industry making a difference, Montgomery aims to be extremely inclusive in the audience that she reaches, inviting everyone to be a part of her “bourbon family.” Although a bourbon lover at heart, her margaritas are not to be missed.

Nick Smith
Head Distiller

As head distiller of Bardstown Bourbon Company, Nick Smith has been a part of the company since day one. He honors the traditional art of making whiskey while bringing a modern technical approach to the distillery’s day-to-day operations and mashbill creations.

A native of Bardstown, Kentucky, Smith comes from a well-known family in the spirits industry, one that owns and operates the local Smith Brothers Distributing Company of Bardstown. After graduating from the University of Kentucky in 2012, he worked his way up to distillery supervisor for Jim Beam in just four years before becoming distillery supervisor for Bardstown Bourbon Company in 2016.  As one of the founding team members, Smith played a pertinent role in the company’s initial growth by aiding in the expansion of the state-of-the-art distillery. From engineering to operations – down to shipping and receiving – Smith has had a hand in the development of each department.

Promoted to head distiller in 2019, Smith now works under the company’s Chief Operating Officer, John Hargrove, the former master distiller at Barton 1792, and alongside Master Distiller and Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Famer, Steve Nally, the former master distiller at Wyoming Whiskey and Maker’s Mark. He’s taken his passion for chemistry and technology to new heights by helping Bardstown Bourbon Company to become the first distillery to utilize the Ignition System as a full process control system – a powerful new software that increases accuracy and efficiency. For Smith, the more data, the better, as he and his team are often managing multiple products at once, all while navigating the latest automations.

You can catch Smith leading  a group of bourbon-curious guests around the property during his “Behind the Scenes with Head Distiller Nick Smith” monthly tours. And when he isn’t working, you can find Smith enjoying time with his wife and son, on the links playing golf, or cheering on his beloved Kentucky Wildcats.

Cut the width of the citrus in half. In a hand juicer, place citrus face down and squeeze. Store in refrigerator up to 8 hours. Avoid prepackaged juice and other alternatives, as they can be pasteurized, contain pulp, and be too acidic.
